Individuals participating in the RIDEforHOPE Spinning® fundraiser on April 26 helped raise more than $9,800 to benefit the Cancer Coalition of South Georgia. All of the funds raised will stay in South Georgia and be used to serve local residents through services such as the Community Cancer Screening ProgramTM, health education, research projects and other outreach initiatives.

Led by International Master Spinning® instructor Josh Taylor, more than 30 indoor cyclists were inspired by the story of Secretariat, the U.S. Triple Crown winning racehorse, during “Champion the RIDE” or connected with nature and their animal instincts during “Animal the RIDE” at Tony’s Westside Athletic Club of Albany. Many participants dedicated their RIDES in honor or memory of loved ones touched by cancer, and their heartfelt RIDES focused on conquering cancer and spreading hope.

This year, the Cancer Coalition added another event to the day’s agenda. FIT for HOPE was also held at Tony’s Gym and offered participants a 90-minute mix of Kickboxing, Cardio Dance, Step and Zumba. More than a dozen participants moved to the music while supporting the Cancer Coalition. Melissa Goodin, Development Manager for the Coalition remarked that the new event was a hit and will be back next year. “We decided to add another type of fitness event just a few weeks before the RIDE. However, it was well received and we will definitely hold FIT for HOPE again,” she said.

“The community came together for the third year to support the Cancer Coalition by participating in these events. It reminds us of how many individuals in this area are affected by cancer and the need to keep fighting,” said Diane Fletcher, CEO of the Cancer Coalition of South Georgia. “With such strong interest from instructors, participants and sponsors, we plan to continue these types of events to raise awareness about our work and promote health while raising funds to help us keep Fighting Cancer … Right Here. Right Now.”

The Cancer Coalition thanks major sponsors Tony Powell, owner of Tony’s Westside Athletic Club and Regions Bank, as well as Capitol City Bank and Trust, AlbanyENT and LongLeaf Dental. In addition, refreshments were provided by Zaxby’s, Wal-Mart, and Sam’s Club. The top three riders raising the most funds were awarded prizes which were provided by Tony’s Westside Athletic Club, Cycle World and Wild Adventures.
